In November, the EU Commission approved two more Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOs) as novel foods. These include:
- 3-Fucosyllactose produced by a derived strain of Escherichia coli K-12 DH1
- 6′-Sialyllactose sodium salt produced by a derived strain of Escherichia coli W (ATCC 9637)
For both authorizations, only the applicant shall be authorized to place the food on the market for a period of five years from the date of entry into force of the respective Regulation, unless a subsequent applicant obtains authorization for the novel food by consent of the applicant or without using the proprietary scientific data referred to in Article 3.
Both foods shall be labelled with the indication that it should not be consumed by
- Children under three years of age
- People who are already consuming other foods containing the ingredient in question on the same day
