Update of the technical guide of metals and alloys used in food contact materials and articles

The revised second edition of the technical guide „Metals and alloys used in food contact materials and articles“ published by the Council of Europe represents a substantial update compared to the first edition from 2013. The technical guide is intended to harmonize requirements and enforcement activities for food contact materials made from metals and alloys at the European level.

New Authorisations: three traditional foods from third country

The European Commission authorised three further novel foods as traditional food from a third country in 2024:

  • Protein concentrate from Lemna gibba and Lemna minor,
  • Bambara (Vigna subterranea) seeds and –flour, as well as
  • Ashitaba (Angelica keiskei) stem juice

The authorisations are based on scientific opinions and a technical report of the European Food Safety Authority respectively (EFSA Journal 2023;21(4):7903 EFSA Supporting publication 2024:EN-8571; EFSA Journal. 2024;22:e8645.).

Update of Guidance document describing the food categories according to Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 on Food Additives

This guidance document describing the food categories in Part E of Annex II to Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 on Food Additives was elaborated by Commission services after consultation with the Member States' experts on food additives and the relevant stakeholders. In July 2024, the EU Commission published the 7th revised version of the guidance document on its website.

EFSA alert: “Vibrio bacteria in seafood - increased risk due to climate change and antimicrobial resistance”

In July 2024 the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published an assessment of public health aspects of Vibrio spp. related to the consumption of seafood in the EU (EFSA Journal. 2024;22:e8896.). According to EFSA the prevalence of Vibrio in seafood is expected to increase both globally and in Europe because of climate change. Additionally, resistance to last-resort antibiotics is increasingly found in some Vibrio species.

Re-evaluation of guar gum (E 412) finalised by EFSA

In its recent opinion concerning the re-evaluation of the additive guar gum (E 412) for infants below 16 weeks of age the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded that the submitted data are not sufficient to support the safe use of guar gum (E 412) in food for infants (below and above 16 weeks of age) and young children under the food categories (FC) 13.1.1, 13.1.5.1 and 13.1.5.2 according to Regulation 1333/2008 (EFSA Journal. 2024;22:e8748).

3-MCPD - Amended MLs in IF, FoF, iFSMP, FSMP for young children and YCF

On 5 April 2024, the European Commission published Regulation (EU) 2024/1003 amending Regulation (EU) 2023/915 as regards maximum levels for the sum of 3-monochlorpropanediol (3-MCPD) and 3-MCPD fatty acid esters in infant formulae (IF), follow-on formulae (FoF) and food for special medical purposes intended for infants (iFSMP) and young children and young child formulae (YCF) in the Official Journal of the European Union.
