With the implementing regulation (EU) 2022/47, the pulp of the coffee cherry, dried or as an infusion thereof, was approved as a novel food. The regulation is applicable from 03 February 2022. The placing on the market of the novel food is not limited to the two applicants.

Coffee cherry is the fruit of the coffee plant, the seeds of which are usually referred to as coffee beans. The novel food is the pulp of the coffee cherry classified as a stone fruit. The dried pulp may be placed on the market for the preparation of infusions, as well as non-alcoholic beverages containing the novel ingredient.

The approval was granted as a traditional food from a third country, following evidence of safe use in Yemen, Ethiopia and Bolivia.

Products made from the novel food that exceed 150 mg/l of caffeine must carry the warning "High caffeine content. Not recommended for children, pregnant women and nursing mothers" and the caffeine content in mg per 100 ml.
