In July 2021, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published three opinions concerning novel food safety evaluations on calcium fructoborate, Locusta migratoria, and calcidiol.

  • Safety of calcium fructoborate as a novel food pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283.
    EFSA concluded that calcium fructoborate is safe for the adult population, excluding pregnant and lactating women, at intake levels up to 220 mg/day (3.14 mg/kg bw per day).

  • Safety of frozen and dried formulations from migratory locust (Locusta migratoria) as a Novel food pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283.
    EFSA concluded that the insect Locusta migratoria is safe under the proposed uses and use levels. However, allergic reactions are likely to occur and EFSA recommends further research on the allergenicity of the novel food, including cross-reactivity to other allergens.

  • Safety of calcidiol monohydrate produced by chemical synthesis as a novel food pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283.
    EFSA concluded that calcidiol, a vitamin D vitamer, is safe under the proposed conditions of use in use levels up to 10 µg/day. The target population is children older than 10 years and adults.
